Text Messaging Set Up

How Texting is set up for NEWT Mobile or Desktop: For NEWTCF Administrators

TEXT Messaging can be enabled on NEWT MOBILE or NEWT DESKTOP APPS.

This included an assigned texting phone number added to the extension and allows the capability of SMS and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) to send messages containing media beyond standard text, including images (JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF), audio files, and longer text messages up to 1,600 characters. Note that size of file transfer is dependant on the limitations as set by the Cell Provider. Because of strict carrier limits, high-resolution media will be heavily compressed.

If you have purchased the Texting Feature for NEWT Mobile or NEWT Desktop Extensions, NEWT will set this up for you and here is what you will see:

Individual Texting

  1. In your TN Tab, you will notice that an SMS/MMS Enabled checkmark is shown for the Telephone Number(s) being used for texting. You will also see which extension this Telephone Number is being routed to.

    Text Enabled Phone Number
  2. You will see the Texting Telephone Number noted in the Extension Settings of the targeted extension (SMS TN).

Texting number assigned to this extension
  3. When texts are sent, this is the number that is going to show up to those receiving the texts, regardless of the normal Outbound Caller ID set for calls on this extension.

Group Texting

If you have multiple NEWT Mobile or NEWT Desktop apps that need to manage texts from one number, you can set up these extensions for group texting. Note that the texting feature must already be purchased and will be added to a phone number on your PBX as "SMS/MMS enabled".

  1. Navigate to the the first extension you wish to add for group texting. In the SMS Group field, select the group number assignment you wish to use and click Save at the bottom of the screen.

  2. Repeat this same process for all extensions that you want to be able to manage texts from this phone number(choosing the same group number assigment on each extension).

  3. Once done, the system will automatically create a routing group option for the telephone number.

  4. Navigate to the TN tab, to the SMS enabled telephone number. In the column labeled "Route SMS to Extension", you can now select the group to route to. Once done, save you change and then Save and Update the PBX to publish.

  5. The Extensions being used will then show the texting number being used, and the Text "Group Number" Assigned. You can ask for up to 9 different texting groups on 9 different texting enabled phone numbers for this feature.
